History

Chevy Chase Club’s skating and hockey programs, which began with the rink’s opening in 1962, have become deeply rooted traditions, attracting members across all ages for both recreational and competitive play. These programs have grown to include options for youth and adults, fostering a strong winter sports community within the Club and making the season an active time for families and individuals alike.

The outdoor rink saw significant upgrades in 1988, expanding the rink to regulation-size 200-foot-by-85-foot rink, allowing the Club to host both organized games and recreational skating, as well as a host of other events and programming. Regular maintenance and updates help ensure high-quality ice throughout the mid-Atlantic winter season. Regular resurfacing and temperature control allow for optimal conditions, making the ice smooth and reliable for both recreational skaters and competitive players.

The Club’s hockey programs are a highlight, with the House League established in the 1990s for weekly games and a season-ending championship. As a founding member of the Chesapeake Bay Hockey League (CBHL), Chevy Chase Club also enables members to participate in competitive play with other regional clubs. For those looking to advance their skills, the Club’s hockey programs emphasize both individual growth and team play in a supportive yet competitive setting. Figure skating programs are similarly popular, with members training for and competing in regional and national events.

Chevy Chase Club’s winter sports programs build strong connections among members, offering seasonal events and updated facilities that support a shared love of tradition. The Club’s emphasis on quality experiences and community engagement makes winter activities a valued part of life for its members.
